Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel Introduction

When booking this trip, I didn’t put much effort into scoring the best hotels, as I was more focused in trying some really great flights and airport lounges. My flight from San Francisco was scheduled to arrive just before 10am (it ended up being a bit delayed), and with a next day flight on Lufthansa in first class, I knew I would be checking out early to maximize my time in the First Class Terminal. I decided to book the Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel as an easy place to crash between flights.

This hotel is conveniently located inside the airport near terminal one, which makes it an ideal spot for a quick layover or a place to stay prior to an early morning departure. I ended up paying cash for the stay, as rates were less than $100 per night, but like many airport hotels, rates can vary dramatically, and there are instances where using 7,000 SPG points for a free-night redemption would make more sense.

After clearing immigration I made my way to the Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel entrance, which was fairly easy to find with signage throughout the airport. The entrance is inside the terminal and easy to spot.

With more than 1,000 rooms, this hotel is enormous, and lines at the check-in counter can stretch almost to the terminal. In fact, I wasn’t able to get a good picture of the lobby until the middle of the night (when I was up from the jet lag).

As a Starwood Preferred Guest Gold elite, I was upgraded from the standard Classic King Bed Room to an Executive Room. According to one of my friends who stays here quite often through his airline, that was quite an upgrade, with the basic rooms in desperate need of a renovation. My Executive King room was comfortable, with a large bed opposite a television, and a comfortable work space in the corner with a window partially overlooking the airport.

The office space was comfortable and featured a large desk with chair, and all of the regular stationary items. I liked the clean lines and considered it a very nice space to get some work done.

There were even partial views of the airport from the room, which happened to be the very spot my 747 parked on arrival (she had left by the time I took this photo).

The bathroom, like the room, was simple and clean. It featured a vanity and toilet, along with a deep soaking tub/shower combination. Amenities were the brand standard for Sheraton, and not very good in my opinion.

Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel Bottom Line

Sheraton isn’t my favourite hotel chain in the SPG lineup, with many of their properties feeling a bit dated and designed more for frequent business travellers and conferences. With over 1,000 rooms, there was nothing personal about this stay, but that’s not what I was looking for on this trip.

I needed a comfortable, clean, conveniently located hotel for my short stopover in Frankfurt, and The Sheraton delivered on all of those needs. Furthermore, as SPG Gold, I was upgraded to a more modern room and offered the choice of bonus SPG points or a welcome drink at check-in (I took the points), which is always appreciated. Hotel rates are wildly variable at this property, so make sure you do some homework before immediately redeeming SPG points for a free-night stay. Paid rates were around $100, which is less than I value 7,000 SPG points (the current number of points required per night), so paying cash was the better option. However, had occupancy rates been high it may have made much more sense to use points.
