At first glance, these look similar. Both earn strong rewards on groceries, dining, and everyday spending. But once you dig in, they take very different approaches.

One is built to earn consistently at high rates across a wide range of stores and categories. The other combines strong earn rates with one of the most flexible points systems in Canada.

Here’s the Quick Answer:

Choose the Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card if:

  • Your goal is to earn as many points as possible from your everyday spending,  especially groceries, dining, gas, and subscriptions.

Choose the American Express Cobalt Card if:

  • You’re thinking longer term (flights, transfers, and getting more value per point), the Amex Cobalt is the stronger card. It earns slightly less in some cases, but gives you more control over how you use your points.

Card Fees: What You’re Paying

Amex Cobalt Fees

The American Express Cobalt Card charges $15.99/month ($191.88/year), which makes it easier to justify month-to-month.

Scotiabank Gold Fees

The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card has a $120 annual fee, and that fee can be waived entirely if you have an eligible Scotiabank chequing account. Interest rates: 21.99% purchases / 22.99% cash advances.

Importantly, the Scotiabank Gold doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees, while the Cobalt adds 2.5% surcharge. If you travel internationally, that difference can add up quickly over the year.

Where You’ll Actually Notice the Difference: Earning Points

How to Earn Points with the Scotiabank Gold Amex

The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card earns:

  • 6X Scene+ points at Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland and more
  • 5X Scene+ points on dining, food delivery and other eligible grocery stores
  • 5X Scene+ points in Canada on eligible entertainment purchases
  • 3X Scene+ points in Canada on eligible gas, daily transit and select streaming services
  • 1X Scene+ point on all other eligible everyday purchases
  • Up to 4X Scene+ points on eligible bookings through Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia

The 6X rate is strongest if you shop at Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland and other participating stores. Other eligible grocery stores earn 5X.

How to Earn Points with the Amex Cobalt

The Cobalt has a similar earning structure:

  • *5X on groceries, dining, and food delivery
  • 3X on streaming
  • 2X on gas and transit

*The 5X on Cobalt is capped at $2,500 per month. After that, it drops to 1x.

If you stay under that cap, Cobalt performs extremely well. If you regularly spend more than that in those categories, the Scotiabank Gold will continue to earn at the full rate.

What Your Points Are Worth

If you’re spending around $1,000/month on groceries and dining, the Scotiabank Gold would earn about 60,000 Scene+ points over a year, that’s worth roughly $600 in travel value.

The Cobalt would also earn about 60,000 Membership Rewards points at the same 5X rate (assuming you’re under the cap). At a baseline, that’s also worth around $600.

However, if you transfer those 60,000 points to Aeroplan, you could realistically book a round-trip short-haul flight within North America, or a one-way long-haul flight that would normally cost $700-$1,000+ in cash, depending on availability and timing.

What Happens When You Redeem Points?

With the Cobalt, you’re earning Membership Rewards points. You can transfer these to programs like Aeroplan, Avios, Marriott, and Hilton.

That means you can:

  • transfer to airline loyalty programs
  • transfer to hotel loyalty programs
  • redeem for travel at fixed rates or flexible rates

If you know how to use these programs, even at a basic level, you can stretch your points further – especially with seasonal bonus transfer promotions.

See how an Amex to Marriott transfer bonus can increase your redemption value.

With the Scotiabank Gold, redemption is straightforward: you book travel however you want, then apply Scene+ points to offset the cost

  • Scotia Gold Amex gives you more points faster
  • Cobalt gives you more ways to use those points

Travel and Everyday Perks

Amex Cobalt Travel & Everyday Benefits

The Cobalt includes access to The Hotel Collection through Amex Travel, which can give you room upgrades, late check-out, and up to a $100 USD property credit on stays of two nights or more . It’s not a full luxury travel card, but it does add value if you book hotels occasionally.

You also get ongoing Amex Offers, which can save money across dining, shopping, and online purchases over time, as well as access to Amex Experiences, including presale tickets, reserved seating, and exclusive events.

Scotiabank Gold Amex Travel & Everyday Benefits

You also get access to Amex Experiences and Amex Offers, but the real value comes from your day-to-day spending.

There are no foreign transaction fees, which is a big advantage if you travel internationally .

You can also earn and redeem points at Shell for fuel savings, and use Scotia SelectPay to split larger purchases into smaller payments

The Winner

For travel perks the Cobalt wins if you will actually enjoy travel and entertainment benefits.

For everyday perks the Scotiabank Gold wins as it’s more practical day-to-day.

Insurance

Amex Cobalt Insurance

The Cobalt stands out with:

  • up to $5,000,000 in emergency medical coverage for 15 days
  • strong extended warranty (up to 2 additional years)

Scotia Gold Amex Insurance

The Scotiabank Gold offers broader trip protection:

  • higher trip cancellation limits (up to $10,000 per trip)
  • baggage coverage up to $1,000
  • longer travel medical duration (25 days)

The Winner

If you want maximum coverage for emergencies, Cobalt is stronger.

If you want better coverage for full trips like delays, baggage and cancellations, Scotia Gold wins.

Final Verdict: Which Card Should You Choose?

If most of your spending goes toward groceries, dining, gas, and subscriptions – and you want a card that just works without any effort, the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card is the better choice.

If you’re the type of person who actually wants to use your points for flights and hotel stays, and getting more value per redemption, then the American Express Cobalt Card is the winner.
