So how much are 20,000 Amex points worth?
The value of your Amex points will depend on how you redeem them. You’ll always get the best redemption when you redeem your points for travel.
But here are all your options so you can decide what makes the most sense for you:
A $200 Travel Statement Credit
You can redeem 20,000 Amex points for a $200 credit towards eligible travel purchases such as flights, hotels, car rentals, or cruises. Your credit will be applied within 48 hours to your account.
You can book direct with hotels, and airlines which is recommended over making a booking with Amex Flexible Points Travel.
Generally you’ll only be able to earn and redeem your hotel and airline loyalty benefits when you book direct with the hotel or airline.
$200 in Credits with Amex Flexible Points Travel
You can also redeem 20,000 Amex points for travel booked through Amex Flexible Travel. Ironically, you’ll have more flexibility not booking with Amex Flexible Points Travel in most cases.
When you book with Amex Flexible Points Travel through Amex.ca/travel you lose your loyalty benefits because it’s categorized as a third party booking.
The recommended way to redeem your points is to book direct, and then redeem your Amex points for a travel statement credit as mentioned above.
Search and book flights, hotels and car rentals with Amex Travel.
Up to $300 in Fixed Points Travel
With Amex Fixed Points Travel, 20,000 Amex points is enough for a return fare economy flight to a neighbouring Province or State (except Alaska), valued up to $300.
The Fixed Points Travel program takes the guesswork out of redeeming your points. As the name suggests, the points you’ll pay is a fixed rate which makes it easy to determine how many points you’ll need for your trip. Keep in mind, if you want the best possible redemption, you’ll want to transfer your Amex points to a Travel Partner.

$200 to $500+ When You Transfer Your Points to Travel Partners
Your best, but most time consuming redemption will be when you transfer your points to an Amex Travel Partner. This is recommended for intermediate to advanced travel hackers who have spent the time and have the knowledge to leverage their points with loyalty programs.
Your redemption value will vary, but here’s a look at what 20,000 Amex points equals for each loyalty program:
Airline Loyalty Programs
You can transfer your Amex points to these airline loyalty programs in Canada:

- Asia Miles. 20,000 Amex points = 15,000 Asia Miles.
- British Airways Executive Club. 20,000 Amex points = 20,000 Avios.
- Delta SkyMiles. 20,000 Amex points = 15,000 SkyMiles.

A $140 General Statement Credit

The minimum redemption requirement is 1,000 points.

$200 in Ticketmaster Event Tickets
“Temporarily” unavailable since April, 2019. We don’t know if, or when this offer will be back.
You can redeem 20,000 Amex points for a $200 credit towards concert, sports, and entertainment tickets when you choose to pay with points at checkout on Ticketmaster. If you’re looking to redeem your points for tickets, make sure to pay with points at checkout rather than redeem your points as a statement credit later on. You’ll get much better value.
How to redeem your Amex points on Ticketmaster:
- Login to Ticketmaster.ca and shop for your event tickets.
- At checkout, click “Yes, I would like to redeem Membership Rewards points for this order.”
$140 in Amazon.ca Purchases
You can redeem 20,000 Amex points for $140 in Amazon purchases at checkout. The redemption rate is the same as if you redeem your points for a general (non-travel related) statement credit, which again, is not great value.
You can pay in a combination of points and cash. Promotional coupons are still valid to bring down the price of your item you want to redeem points for.
Here’s how to redeem your points:
- Sign in to Amazon.ca and link your Amex account to your Amazon account.
- Shop with points!

$100 to $150 in Merchandise from the Membership Rewards Catalogue
We recommend not redeeming your points for products in the Membership Rewards Catalogue because of the poor redemption value. If you see something you like in the catalogue you’re almost always better off saving your points for travel, or even a statement credit, as items in the catalogue are usually overpriced if you pay with points.
But just for fun, let’s take a look at what you can get for 20,000 Amex points:
Shop the Amex Membership Rewards Catalogue.
- $150 Home Depot Gift Card for 19,500 Amex points.
- Cuisinart Hand Mixer for 20,000 Amex points.
- Zwilling 4-Piece Sommelier Set for 19,900 points.
- Bugatti Duffel Bag for 19,300 Amex points.
- Lodge Cast Iron Skillets x2 for 18,500 Amex points.

Hi Britt,
is it worth it to get the business platinum with the high annual fee? I won’t be using the referral program, we will be purchasing as often as possible for our construction company. We are working to find a maximum amount of points as td points doesn’t seem to be gaining us what should be.
Thanks
