Remember, we can take advantage of transferring our Amex points to British Airways and then use those points to fly on airlines in the Oneworld alliance, and Alaska Airlines because they also have a partnership with British Airways.

Behold! The 30% Transfer Bonus in Canada When You Transfer American Express Points to Avios
Sweet Spot
This transfer bonus should get you really excited! You’ll get 30% more points when you transfer your American Express points to Avios during the promotional period. That’s a huge savings, and a great opportunity to stretch your points farther.
Historically, this transfer bonus has been offered to Canadians around September/October and usually lasts a couple of months. Since this promotion seems to roll around every year, mark it on your calendar so you can plan your next trip accordingly and transfer your points during this time frame to get the maximum value.
Remember, you just need to transfer your points during that promotion, but you can hold off to book your trip until the time is right for you.
It’s worth noting, that even though this promotion is a net win, Canadians still get the shaft, as Americans receive a higher value 40% transfer bonus instead. Aren’t we used to that by now though?

Math Time
If you were to sign up for the Amex Platinum Card, you’d receive a welcome bonus of 50,000 points (once you’ve met the minimum spend requirement of $3,000 in the first 3 months.) If you were to spend that $3,000 at a base earning rate (not on travel or restaurants in Canada), you would earn a minimum of 3,000 points, bringing you up to 53,000 points total.
With the transfer bonus of 30% that would be 53,000 x 1.30 = 68,900 Avios miles for you to spend on flights, for the annual cost of the Card which is $699, which includes a $200 travel credit, bringing the total down to $499.
Example Time
What can you do with 68,900 Avios for $499?
- You’d have enough points for a round trip flight from Vancouver to Tokyo.
- Or how about 3 round trip plane tickets from Toronto to Miami.
- If you’re in Calgary, you can fly to Chicago or Dallas round trip 3 times.
- Or 2 round trip nonstop tickets from Vancouver to London (Heathrow). If you’re leaving from Toronto, make that 3 round trip tickets.
- You can fly from Montreal to Qatar in the Middle East round trip, with almost 7,000 points leftover to put towards your next flight.
- If you’re in BC and can get down to Seattle, you can easily fly 2 people round trip to Hawaii or Mexico with almost 17,000 points leftover!
- 2 round trip flights to Hawaii for the annual cost of the Amex Platinum of $699 ($350 CAD per person plus approximately $100 total in taxes and fees) is a great deal with plenty of points leftover is completely doable for a travel hacking beginner in Canada!
