We’ve seen multiple Amex Cards in Canada receive increased welcome bonuses lately, with Cards offering higher and higher welcome bonuses to compensate for the low offers we saw during Covid.

However, the good times have come to an end – for now. Earlier this month on May 12, 2022, Amex Canada devalued a whopping 8 Cards – slashing welcome bonuses down to bare bones offers.

While the annual fees remain the same, the welcome bonuses have dropped significantly, leaving new Cardholders out of luck to earn more points for the time being.

If you’ve been holding off on getting a new Amex Card, you may want to hold off even longer until these offers bounce back. With our Amex welcome bonus tracker, we track the best times to apply for an Amex Card based on the welcome bonus offer.

Let’s take a look at the damage:

Amex Platinum Card Canada

The Amex Platinum Card Canada welcome bonus is back to where it was in August, 2021 at 80,000 points. That’s down from the record high of 150,000 points we saw in June last summer. While we don’t expect to see the 150,000 point offer come back anytime soon, it may be worth holding off to apply and see the current offer increase.

Amex Gold Rewards Card Canada

The Amex Gold Card sees less updates to the welcome bonus compared to other Cards in the Amex Canada portfolio. This Card is back to 50,000 points, down from 70,000 which is in align with the September, 2021 offer.

Marriott Bonvoy Amex Card Canada

The Marriott Bonvoy Card Canada has historically seen a lot of updates to the welcome bonus. Currently, the offer is the lowest we’ve seen in the last three years. Hopefully we will see this offer bumped up with the next update.

Amex Aeroplan Card Canada

The Amex Aeroplan Card also took a slight ding, down from 60,000 to 50,000 points. Going off previous welcome bonus offers, this is still a reasonable time to apply for this Card.

Amex Aeroplan Reserve Card Canada

The Amex Aeroplan Reserve Card usually offers almost double the welcome bonus than the entry level Aeroplan Card. The current offer of 85,000 Aeroplan points is down from 110,000 offered in March of this year, which is an average offer for this Card at this time.

Amex Business Platinum Card Canada

The Business Platinum Card has been steadily climbing with welcome bonus offers going from a lowly 35,000 points in May, 2020 to a high of 110,000 points this past March. With the current offer of 80,000 points it remains to be seen if the welcome bonus will continue to dip, but right now this is still a reasonable time to apply.

Currently the offer is the same as the Personal Platinum Card, as these two usually have the same or similar offers.

Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex Card

The Marriott Bonvoy Business Card’s welcome bonus has been on a steady decline since the record high of 105,000 Bonvoy points in August, 2021. Although we don’t expect to see the welcome bonus rebound to that number, this Card is due for some good news. Hopefully with the next Amex Canada update we will see the current offer of 50,000 start to climb again. As of right now, this is a weak offer for this Card.

Amex Aeroplan Business Reserve Card

The Aeroplan Business Reserve Card welcome bonus is generally the same as the Personal Reserve Card. Down to 85,000 Aeroplan points from 110,000 in March, this is a below average offer. Hopefully we will see this Card hit the 100k Aeroplan points offer with the next Amex update.

Conclusion

It’s rare to see Amex Canada slash offers across 8 Cards all at once, however we have seen some overall strong welcome bonuses offered recently to make up for the abysmal offers we saw during the pandemic. What goes up, must come down, we just hope you applied at the right time to maximize your earnings.

Stay tuned for Amex Canada’s next update, hopefully in June, as we anticipate good changes to the welcome bonuses, making it a better time to apply for these Cards. We’ll be back with another welcome bonus tracker update when we hear from Amex Canada!
