I guess the Summer fun is over with increased welcome bonuses coming to an end.
As of September 21, 2022, Amex Canada devalued 3 business Cards:
- Business Platinum Card from American Express
- American Express Aeroplan Business Reserve Card
- Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card
If you’re looking to apply for any of these Cards, you’re better to wait until the welcome bonus points bounce back.
Knowing when the best time to apply for an Amex Card will give you more points to travel, for the same annual fee. Amex usually switches up their welcome bonus a few times a year, so it’s important to know the best time to apply.
We’ve tracked Amex welcome bonuses over the last two years and can show you how to get the most welcome bonus points. Amex Welcome bonuses can fluctuate drastically so look at the welcome bonus tracker near the bottom of each Amex Card Review to be sure you’re getting the best signup deal.
Amex Business Platinum Card Canada Welcome Bonus
The welcome bonus on the Business Platinum Card Canada usually changes every 3-6 months. It has gone up to 110,00 Amex Membership Reward points and down to the current 80,000 points over the last year.
Embarrassingly, the welcome bonus on this Card fell to 35,000 Amex points around the start of the pandemic; May, 2020.
Amex Aeroplan Business Reserve Card Welcome Bonus
The Amex Aeroplan Business Reserve Card welcome bonus dropped from 110,000 Aeroplan points down to 85,000 for September. The same happened earlier this year. We have yet to see the offer we did on this Card for 150,000 Aeroplan points which was offered last summer.
Amex Marriott Bonvoy Business Card
The Marriott Bonvoy Business Card and Personal Card change their welcome bonuses a lot. Knowing when the right time to apply is can allow you to put those points towards an extra special weekend getaway – or just not have to spend as much to earn points the old fashioned way.
You should definitely wait to apply for this Card until a stronger welcome bonus is awarded – which could be 3 months or more.
The current offer of 50,000 points is at a 3-year low, so there’s nowhere to go but up – right?
Applying last Summer would have got you over double the points on this Card. We are not expecting that strong of an offer anytime soon, but hang on for more points to come.
Conclusion
It’s always a bummer when the majority of the fleet of Amex Cards gets devalued for travel hackers. But if anything, hopefully this post helps you with your travel hacking goals of strategically planning to apply for the next Amex Card to fuel your travels.
No one likes to pay more for less. You can always earn points with daily spending, but knowing when the best time to apply for an Amex and being patient can make earning points much easier.
And if you think that was bad news about 3 Business Cards being devalued, go check out the 6 Amex Personal Cards that were as well. That’s a total of 9 Amex Cards in Canada devalued overnight. Ouch!
